For more than a decade, the university has promoted regional cooperation among scientific institutions, policymakers and market stakeholders on issues related to SDG 7 by transferring knowledge, training and developing energy efficiency policies.

The university actively promotes scientific and economic collaboration on the development of regional energy markets, the construction of transcontinental and regional energy interconnections and climate change policies. The university regularly organizes an international conference on energy policy issues, publishes the and undertakes several projects on energy efficiency and green energy.

The Centre recently concluded a three year project on consumer behavior in switching to more energy efficient policies and is now working on a project to mitigate energy poverty and reduce CO2 emissions in energy-poor households in Southeast Europe, the Black Sea and Central Asia. The building where the Centre is located aims to demonstrate bioclimatic features in public buildings and has a “green roof” and an internal atrium for insolation and natural lighting. The structure uses solar energy for passive heating and electricity generation, uses biofuel as an energy source, and has canopies and thermal protection for sun protection in the summer. The bioclimatic considerations began with the location of the building, which was selected for optimal energy use.

KEPA is currently focused on policies on climate change, the implementation of the "smart grids" concept, the development of "virtual" power plants and the promotion of a regional energy market. At UNISINOS, social and environmental responsibility is an institutional guideline for the design and implementation of plans and policies, at the level of education, research, and extension, and also at the managerial level.

The concept of social and environmental responsibility, as understood by the university, encompasses three major sets of actions and aims at: (a) Recognizing dignity in diversity; (b) Developing, implementing and evaluating policies to overcome social inequalities; and (c) Caring for nature's assets. It has incorporated these ideas within its overall mission, to "build knowledge and train professionals for a sustainable society.”

Since its inception, the university began an active relationship with the society from which it was generating each one of the projects that it launched and that was expressed in a sustained growth according to the demands of the region.

Its current structure consists of 12 faculties and 1 center for interdisciplinary studies. It has a building area of ​​68,000 square meters with an academic offer consisting of 171 postgraduate degrees, 63 undergraduate degrees, 15 technical courses, 53 intermediate degrees and several other programs.

Climate change and environmental protection are at the core of some of these programs. For instance,��the Master’s program in Energy for Sustainable Development, which is managed by the Lab of Energy for Sustainable Development. The purpose of the latter is to contribute to the design and implementation of a new sustainable energy model that seeks not only to reduce the environmental impacts of human activity, but also to adequately generate wealth in pursuit of the socio-economic development of the region. The institution has been consistently ranked among the top 47 greenest university campuses in the world and the greenest university of Iran, which follows sustainability indicators for infrastructure as well as energy, research, education, waste management, water management and transportation. The university is in a semiarid region and over the last 40 years the university has expanded its tree cultivation to over 72 hectares, and its total vegetation area now covers over 94% of total campus area.

The university has also increased and improved its investment in sustainability, smart buildings and water management in both buildings and vegetated areas and has conducted a third of its research on topics like integrated watershed and management of biodiversity, natural resources and soil. The institution conducts research, education and extension activities on protecting, restoring and promoting sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably managing forests, combating desertification and halting and reversing land degradation and biodiversity loss.

The institution plans to restore biodiversity and actively support local wildlife following the ‘green management strategy’ which, in addition to various administrative processes and physical upgrades, entails a series of cultural engagements and educational activities in order to increase social awareness around sustainability. In addition, the university has hosted national, regional and international events with numerous partners on issues directly connected to biodiversity.

By the end of 2021 the institution plans to establish the International Research and Extension Center of Sustainable Development and Natural Resources.

in the United Kingdom, aims to build a scholarly community committed to the public good and underpinned by an ability to challenge convention and create impact. The university has created a network of 100 like-minded universities across the globe to share research, information and good practice with the aim of promoting peace, justice and strong institutions in line with Sustainable Development Goal 16.

The university has created a support program for refugees and asylum seekers arriving in the United Kingdom, offering a wide range of services. This initiative is reinforced by DMU’s refugee outreach programme that includes student volunteer work in various European capitals.

The institution also has a research and support program to fight the scourge of modern slavery that blights the lives of millions. DMU conducts pioneering research and formed the Leicester and Leicestershire Modern Slavery Action Group to help combat the problem. The university has also teamed up with the national British charity Unseen to promote its hotline for victims of modern slavery to come forward to stop their exploitation.

The university has various initiatives at the local level to foster youth participation in the electoral process, particularly among youth in marginalized communities. A Democracy Café has been established to listen to students, give them a voice and engage them in the political process.

DMU also offers courses and programs related to global human rights issues and faculty members have participated in research projects on immigration law and linguistic minorities, among other areas of research. Moreover, the institution offers an , to explore the birth of international human rights thinking and the struggle to balance competing rights while examining international human rights legal systems.

The university also hosts the , which includes staff with nationally recognized expertise in probation, policing, applied criminology and community and criminal justice. It also works with partners across the city of Leicester on two major projects to combat the growing problem of knife crime. The works to increase professionalism and accountability across all criminal justice agencies nationally and internationally.

Finally, the undertakes various initiatives and projects to challenge anti-Semitism and Islamophobia while promoting the integration of minority communities in British society. The work is based on the idea that social interaction at the personal and community level help to build tolerance and understanding and advance peace by combating xenophobia and bigotry.
