Sustainable Development Goals

The , adopted by the General Assembly in September 2015, provides an ambitious set of goals whose achievement will set humanity on a path towards sustainability. Progress made toward achieving the Agenda’s 17  and 169 targets will need to be monitored closely to provide timely guidance for effective action. The data requirements partially overlap with, and in some cases go beyond, those needed to monitor the  of the International Conference on Population and Development.

The  for the SDGs and targets of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which was adopted by the General Assembly in July 2017, includes 231 unique indicators.

The Population Division:

  • is  of the following three SDG indicators:
  1. SDG 3.7.1 Proportion of women of reproductive age (aged 15–49 years) who have their need for family planning satisfied with modern methods (see: SDG Indicator 3.7.1 on Contraceptive Use)
  2. SDG 3.7.2 Adolescent birth rate (aged 10–14 years; aged 15–19 years) per 1,000 women in that age group (see: Fertility and Marriage)
  3. SDG 10.7.2 Number of countries with migration policies that facilitate orderly, safe, regular and responsible migration and mobility of people (see: SDG Indicator 10.7.2 on migration policies)*
  • is a  for several SDG indicators, including:
  1. SDG 3.1.1 Maternal mortality ratio**
  2. SDG 3.2.1 Under 5 mortality rate***
  3. SDG 3.2.2 Neonatal mortality rate***
  4. SDG 5.3.1 Proportion of women aged 20–24 years who were married or in a union before age 15 and before age 18 
  5. SDG 5.6.2 Number of countries with laws and regulations that guarantee full and equal access to women and men aged 15 years and older to sexual and reproductive health care, information and education 
  • Provides population data essential for the global monitoring of around one-quarter of the 231 SDG indicators. Data from the are used to compute national-level estimates for a subset of these indicators and, more broadly, to derive regional aggregates using a consistent set of population weights.
