Regional judicial colloquia for judges and magistrates on the application of international human rights law, in particular the Convention, at the domestic level

The Division convenes regional judicial colloquia to enhance application of international human rights law, and in particular the Convention, by judicial officers in domestic courts. The colloquia aim to show how international human rights norms, particularly those contained in the Convention, can be incorporated into every-day judicial decision-making and the interpretation of laws at the domestic level in order to achieve equality for women and girls.

Former and current members of the Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination serve as facilitators at the colloquia, together with sitting judges, academic experts on women’s human rights and staff of the Division.

Building on its 1999 international judicial colloquium in Vienna, Bringing International Human Rights Law Home(2000) brought together almost
100 judicial officers from 65 countries, the Division has held regional judicial colloquia in Thailand, Tanzania, The Bahamas and Chile. In the last three years, over 50 judicial officers from 29 countries have participated in the Division’s judicial colloquia
