After a slight decline from the years 2009 and 2010 (25 million in each year) to 2011 (22.4 million), the number of people internally displaced as a result of conflict and violence increased sharply from the year 2011 to 2015, surpassing 40 million. After stagnating for three years, this number started to rise again in 2018 (41.6 million) to reach 53.2 million in 2021.
