007 PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION FIXED FIELD

The first position of field 007 consist of a single-letter code that specifies the physical form of the item. It may represent the whole item or part of the item (such as accompanying material, or a part of a kit). Use optionally for certain types of materials such as maps, electronic resources, projected graphics, microforms, motion pictures, sound recordings or video recordings.
Use also when the code value recorded in the Leader 000/06 (Type of record) does not adequately reflect the physical format of the item; for example, if an electronic resource is coded a (language material), then the value c (electronic resource) may be entered in field 007.
If an item is available in various physical formats, it is not necessary to add tag 007 for every available physical format. For example, it is not necessary to add tag 007 for a document that is available both in printed form and as an electronic resource. When the first position of 007 is coded for a certain type of material, additional posititions may be available for coding based on that type of material.

See CODES for UNBIS code values that may be used in 007 character positions. Most commonly used codes for non-print materials include the following:

    a - map
    c - electronic resource
    s - sound recording
    v - videorecording
